Questions to ask a computer repair shop before you hand over a device

A repair shop may see everything on your device. A few questions up front protect your data and your budget.

Is there a diagnostic fee, and does it count toward the repair? Ask before you leave the device.

Will you call with a quote before doing the work? Ask the shop to confirm the price before it starts any repair.

What happens to my data? Ask whether the repair puts your files at risk and whether the shop can back them up first. Back up anything important yourself before you drop the device off, if you can.

Do you need my password? Some repairs need access and some don't. If the shop needs it, consider changing the password afterwards.

Is the repair guaranteed, and for how long? Get the answer in writing on the receipt.
